Mitchell’s Nursery is gearing up for its largest poinsettia season to date. Here at Mitchell’s, we are growing over 12,000 poinsettias in a whopping 88 varieties. We’re supplying them for our lovely customers, local churches, and businesses as far out as southern Virginia. Our greenhouse during the Holiday Season is an ocean of dazzling, jaw-dropping colors. One very unique thing about Mitchell’s that sets us apart from other greenhouses is our experimental poinsettia varieties. Some of our poinsettias are test trials for poinsettia breeders, which is why some of the poinsettias we have here are named with numbers. They will be available for purchase starting in the middle of November. Instead of a formal Poinsettia Open House, this year Mitchell’s is hosting poinsettia voting from November 27th to December 5th during our regular M-F hours (8 AM to 5 PM), Saturday (8 AM-4 PM) and for 2 additional days on Sunday, November 27th and Sunday, December 4th from 12 PM to 3 PM. Ballots will be tabulated and the information will be sent back to the breeders. Mitchell’s is one of just a few testing sites in the United States. The only other testing site in North Carolina is in Raleigh.
