Hey there, garden growers! I have got to tell you about a new discovery in my garden journey, the Yezberry Solo (Lonicera caerulea), also known as Honeyberry, Haskap, or Blue Honeysuckle. This is a cold-hardy, low-maintenance, superfruit plant!
What’s Yezberry Solo?
The plant produces yellow flowers very early in spring that grow into a bluish purple berry that combines the best qualities of blueberries and raspberries, all wrapped up in one. Hardy for colder climates, this shrub is a true champion for gardeners seeking something new to grow, with a delicious taste, while being good for you to eat.
Why Grow It? The plant is easy to grow, the fruit has a great flavor, and the health benefits are numerous. Researching these plants, I’ve found that ‘Haskap’ is a more common name, where the plant has been developed in Japan. It’s been used for centuries but is relatively unknown in North America. If you grow this, you can expect it to be one of the earliest fruits to ripen in your garden, before strawberries or early blueberries. It grows over five feet tall and can produce fruit for decades. The fruit can be eaten fresh, frozen, or processed for a wide range of kitchen creations.
Grow Your Own Yezberry Patch!
One of the most appealing aspects of growing the Yezberry is its incredible hardiness and easy results. The Yezberry is a great starting point or companion plant to your existing edible landscape.
- Sun and Soil: Yezberry loves full sun, thriving in at least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight per day. They’re not too picky about soil, but prefer well-draining loam with a slightly acidic to neutral pH (6.0-7.0). If your soil is heavy clay, consider amending it with Daddy Pete’s planting mix to improve drainage.
- Planting Time: The best time to plant Yezberry is in early spring or fall when the weather is cool. Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball, not quite as deep; the top of the root ball should rest about 1-2 inches above the soil line. Gently loosen the roots, place the plant, and backfill with amended soil. Water them well, let the water soak in several times to remove air pockets.
- Pollinating: Yezberry Solo is self-pollinating, but to get a really good harvest, you’ll want at least two different varieties planted within about 20 feet of each other.
- Watering: During their first year, consistent watering is important. Water deeply 2-3 times a week, especially during dry spells. Once established, they’re fairly drought-tolerant, but still appreciate a good drink during prolonged dry periods, especially when fruits are developing.
- Fertilizers: A balanced organic fertilizer in early spring will give your Yezberries a boost. A layer of compost around the base of the plant also acts as a slow-release food source and helps retain moisture.
- Pruning: Yezberries are relatively low-maintenance when it comes to pruning. For the first 3-4 years, simply remove any dead, damaged, or crossing branches. Once mature, you can do some light thinning in late winter to encourage new growth and maintain an open structure. The goal with pruning as it matures is to create good air circulation and sunlight penetration.
A Superfruit for Your Health
Beyond their delicious taste and easy care, Yezberries are nutritional superstars. They are absolutely packed with antioxidants, vitamins (especially Vitamin C), and minerals, making them a great addition to a healthy diet. Studies suggest Yezberry can support heart health, boost immunity, and have anti-aging properties. Integrating the nutrients and micronutrients of Yezberry gives you a powerful health boost.
Yezberries in the Kitchen
Once you start harvesting your own Yezberries, you’ll find many ways to enjoy them. Of course, eating them fresh, straight from the bush, is convenient. But don’t stop there!
- Jams & Jellies
- Smoothies
- Desserts: Pie, tarts, crumbles – anywhere you’d use blueberries, Yezberries can shine!
- Sauces: A Yez berry reduction pairs wonderfully with poultry or pork.
- Freezing: Enjoy their goodness all year long. Wash them and freeze them in a single layer on a baking sheet before transferring to a freezer bag.
