- Water. If we don’t get an inch of rain for an entire week, thoroughly water any plants planted in the last year.
- Fertilize. Knowing when and how to fertilize is key. If your plants haven’t been fertilized within the year, it’s time to use a slow or timed-release fertilizer. However, Wait to fertilize after mid-August, so plants will slow growth to prepare for winter.
- Weeding. Keep weeds under control so they don’t reseed and make more weeds.
- Pruning. Don’t prune spring shrubs after the first of August so you don’t cut off future spring blooms. Pruning evergreen leafy shrubs, if needed, is about more than just maintenance. It’s about preserving their beauty so they don’t look butchered come winter.
