What to Do with your Flowers, Shrubs, and Trees this Fall
Although autumn is the best time for planting, it is not the best time to fertilize trees and shrubs or prune them (though there are some exceptions). Most trees, bushes, shrubs, and flowers are transitioning into dormancy. Fertilizing plants now could prove harmful because fertilizer can stimulate new growth that may be stunted by the first cold snap. Different trees and shrubs need pruning at different times, depending on the bloom time. Trees and shrubs in our area should be left alone while they are preparing to go dormant. Pruning now encourages new growth similar to spring growth that will burn with the first frost. Some trees will even split when they freeze if they are pruned in the fall. Watch in our upcoming newsletters for proper pruning times as their seasons come. Check out our Plant Listings for more facts & fun!
